Exercise 14.1

In this exercise, you will create a boot disk for an Intel-based server.

1.  Insert a 3.5-inch floppy into the A drive.
2.  From the Windows NT Explorer, format the floppy.
3.  Click on View from the menu and select Options.
4.  Select Show all files.
5.  Deselect Hide file extensions for known file types.
6.  Click OK.
7.  From the root of the C drive, copy the following files to the A drive:
  Ntldr
  Ntdetect.com
  Boot.ini
  Bootsect.dos (if it exists)
  Ntbootdd.sys (if it exists)
8.  Remove the floppy.

Exercise 14.2

In this exercise, you will simulate missing boot files.

1.  Select Boot.ini, Ntldr, and Ntdetect.com (hold the Ctrl key down while clicking them).
2.  Right click while pointing to one of the files, and select Properties.
3.  Clear the box marked Read Only, and delete the four files (leave them in the Recycle Bin).
4.  Next, you must restart the computer. Make a note of the error message you receive.
5.  Insert the boot disk, restart the computer, and then log on using an administrator account.
6.  Open the Recycle Bin and restore the Ntldr file.
7.  Remove the boot disk, restart the computer, and make a note of the error message that you receive.
8.  Insert the boot disk and restart the computer and then log on using an administrator account.
9.  Open the Recycle Bin and restore the Boot.ini.
10.  Remove the boot disk, restart the computer, and make a note of the error message that you receive.
11.  Insert the boot disk, restart the computer, and log on using an administrator account.
12.  Open the Recycle Bin and restore the Ntdetect.com.
